Living in the Stable in Zihlschlacht

On the edge of the rural village of Zihlschlacht in Thurgau, a former agricultural stable from 1985 has been carefully transformed into a contemporary residence. The conversion preserves the original character and structure of the building while gently introducing the qualities of modern domestic life.

From the outside, the building retains its understated presence, with a facade clad in spruce wood that blends naturally into the surrounding landscape. Generous new openings on the narrow ends of the house draw daylight deep into the interior, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere.

Inside, the design is defined by a clear material language. White fir is used consistently throughout—from walls and ceilings to built-in furniture—lending warmth, tactile softness, and a unified spatial identity. The detailing is minimal, allowing the qualities of light and timber to shape the experience of the rooms.

The spatial organization responds to the building’s original layout: secondary spaces such as the entrance, utility room, and garage are housed on the ground floor, while the main living areas are placed above. An inset balcony on the southern facade offers a sheltered outdoor space and a direct connection to the surrounding fields.

“Living in the Stable” demonstrates how architectural sensitivity and natural materials can bring new life to a utilitarian structure. The result is a calm and timeless home—rooted in the past, yet open to the rhythms of contemporary rural living.
