Ostendstrasse

The design for this six-storey apartment building in Frankfurt´s Ostend district – built on the site of a former petrol station – is tuned sensitively to the perimeter-block situation. On the street façade, distinct Expressionist elements and the articulation into four projecting bays are a deliberate nod to the late 19th-century townhouses in this area. A bold alternation of clinker cladding and ashlar cornices provides for horizontal articulation in the façade. A raised ground floor, the narrow side passageway and the generous entrance situation identify the building as a typical townhouse integrated into the perimeter development around a city block. The courtyard side, contrasting with the street front, draws on motifs from post-war Modernism, this being a response to the neighbouring buildings: Widely cantilevered, U-shaped balconies with slim balustrade railings extend out from and around a central projecting section on this rear façade; the balconies are flanked on each side by loggias. In the interior, the standard arrangement is four apartments grouped around the hallway on each floor, with a wide variety of ground plans and layouts.
