Workshops Wattens 1st Estension
Wattens, Austria
First extension
In 2015, the Destination Wattens Company for Regional Development (a public/private partnership between Daniel Swarovski KG and Market Town Wattens) inaugurated an international centre for founders and start-up companies in the former Swarovski factory compound, 'Werk 2'. The project is named 'Werkstaette Wattens'. Due to increasing demand, the first adaptation began in 2017, followed by a second in 2019.
Building 6, constructed in 1906, features typical elements of early industrial architecture from around the turn of the century. Behind the palazzo-style façade with an external staircase, a central indoor staircase leads to four 'polishing workshops'. Steel beams and cement vaults support stairwells and platforms, while cast-iron columns and wooden ceilings define the character of the 'polishing workshops'. Over the years, however, the clear structure and simple spatial sequence had disappeared. The aim of the design was to regain the original structure and spatial sequences, and to add clearly distinctive new elements.
Public areas
The staircase shell (floor, walls and ceiling) has been renovated. The stairwells and platforms have been restored to their original state. Natural light exposure has been restored by demolishing hollow walls and cladding.
Polishing Workshop
The floor, walls and ceiling structure of the 'polishing workshop' have been kept in their original condition, with only minor adaptations.
Large glass walls separate the new office units, each of which is equipped with a wooden box for use as a retreat area. Each box unit inside is clad with oak panels, while the outer shell is coated with white, polished varnish. There is a clear contrast between the open space, which has been kept in its original state, and the new built-in elements.
Wooden boxes and glass walls define a meandering circulation zone. This subtle sequence of spatial widening and narrowing leads to a communal kitchenette with an adjacent outdoor terrace. Two 'light beams' provide the office spaces with direct and indirect light, their components extending over the complete length of the room on both sides. A few additional light beams have been added to the existing ceiling structure.
Workshops and serving spaces
On the ground floor, rooms have been adapted to house workshop units. Further additions for all occupants of the 'Werkstaette Wattens' include a new wheelchair ramp, storage areas and showers.
