HANCHIKU HOUSE vol.2

Marugame-city, Kagawa, Japon

This is a residence for elderly couple who has been retired and is for the couple to stay, but also they have grandsons who visit them every summer and new year holidays. It needs to have a space for them to gather to dine but also to sleep in. We introduce partitions to create units so each family has their own room.

The clients also requested not to hustle going up and down the stairs, so the house was designed to have just one floor. This gave possibilities to construct the house with rammed earth because this material is expensive and technically more difficult for two-story houses. For only one-story house with rammed earth house would be reasonable compared to the house with other materials.

The rammed earth walls covered only with roof can introduce the new way of Japanese beauty in our architecture.
