Singapore's WOHA describes its Kampung Admiralty, which won World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival 2018, as a "club sandwich," a stacking of functions normally fitting into separate buildings on individual sites. A short film reveals the building's many layers.
Kampung Admiralty consists of a public plaza with dining at its base, a medical center above the plaza, and senior housing and a community park for those residents on the upper levels. The whole, located close to public transit, promotes aging in place through the creation of a "vertical village." Photographs of Kampung Admiralty express its architectural appeal, but the short film captures its many social benefits as well.
