Keeping it Modern 2016
The Getty Foundation has announced the nine buildings that have been awarded Keeping It Modern grants, which are designed to preserve the modern architectural heritage at considerable risk.
Keeping It Modern was created in 2014 to respond to the deterioration of many modern buildings of last century since "the cutting-edge building materials and structural systems that define the modern movement were often untested and have not always performed well over time," per the Getty Foundation. Further, "Heritage professionals do not always have enough scientific data on the nature and behavior of these materials and systems to develop the necessary protocols for conservation treatment." Grants range from about $100,000 to $200,000 to address these concerns.
The Getty Foundation gave out 10 grants in its first year, followed by 14 grants last year and 9 grants this year. The 2016 grants are highlighted below; more information on the projects can be found on the Getty Foundation website.
